Hamirpur district forms the middle part of the State. It is bound by Kangra district in the north, Mandi district in the north east, Bilaspur and Una districts in the south east and south respectively. lt is located between 76° 16" and 76°43" East longitudes and 31°35" and 31 °55" North latitudes. As per revenue record the geographical area of this district is 1, 10,070 hectares and according to Survey of India total geographical area is 1118 sq. kms. Hamirpur is the smallest district (area wise) in Himachal Pradesh. Ycom administrative view point, the district has been divided into six developmental blocks viz. Hamirpur, Bhoranj, Nadaun, Bijhari, Sujanpur Tira and Tauni Devi. There are 209 Panchayats covering 1617 villages and five towns namely Barsar, Hamirpur, Nadaun, Bijhari and Sujanpur. The elevation varies between 350 meters tO 1100 meters above mean sea lexel. Farmers generally grow maize and paddy during Kharif season and wheat during Rabi season. Some farmers having irrigated area have now switched over to the cash crops like fruits and vegetables.

Climate

Hamirpur district falls in sub-humid sub-tropical zone. The winter prevails from November to March, spring in April and May, summer from June to September and transition season from October to November. The minimum temperature in the winter goes to 4° C and rises to maximum 38° C in summer. The average annual rainfall is about 1600 mm. There are two seasons of rainfall during the year one from December to March, associated with the passage of western disturbances and the other which is the main one, extending from middle of June till middle of September, caused by the south west monsoons. Some rain is also received in the post monsoon month of October. A major portion of precipitation (74%) is received during monsoon period from June to September. July and August are the wettest months.

The percentage of net area irrigated to the net area shown was 4.92 per cent. Irrigated area is maximum (898 ha) in Bhoranj Tehsil and is minimum (55 ha) in Barsar Tehsil. Three major sources of irrigation viz. lift irrigation, Kuhals and tube wells and wells are prominent in the district.

This tract is characterized by hill ranges, intermingled with rivers, rivulets, and streams. Numerous small barren hills, hillocks, and rocks are scattered all over the area. Cultivation is done usually in small terraces across the slopes as steep as 60 degree. The width of terraces varies between 2 and 5 meters and slope within the terrace is around 1-3 per cent. The elevation varies between 650 meters to 1100 meters above mean sea level.
